TKF's Gandhi Nonviolence Awards 2005

Awards were given in each of the following categories: Community Leadership (Community Leader-Individual and Community Leader-Organization), Education, Business, Community Communications, Faith Community, and Youth (a male and a female winner). The award winners were honored on stage and received a special plaque. The two youth winners each received a $500 scholarship.


Business – Charles and Bessie Johnson

Their restaurant, Magnolia’s, employs at risk youth and ex-gang members.

Reaches out to youth to promote peace after losing his son in Iraq.

Community Leader (Organization) – Difference Makers, International

Helice Bridges founded this 25 yr old international program of acknowledgement.

Education – Harborside Elementary School

Principal Olga West and Assistant Principal Pamela Page successfully implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program at their school.

Faith Community – Sister Claire Frawley

Founded St. Clare’s Homes in 1983, assisting homeless/abused mothers & children.

Community Communications – Chris Runio

Chris created Crew and Jr. Crew, performers who promote living a drug free life.

Youth (Female) – Shardie Flenoid, 18

18 yr old leader in S.D. Young Artists Music Academy.

Youth (Male) – Antonio Figueroa, 15

15 yr old involved in: Latinos y Latinas en Accion, Mid-City CAN Coordinating Council; Cesar Chavez Club, Aquatic Adventures.
